Madison County is seeking to partner with a developer on the redevelopment of 160 Center Street in Canastota, NY (‘project site’).  The project site, currently owned by Madison County, is 2.5 acres in size, has approximately 250 feet of frontage along the historic Erie Canal, and is located within a two-minute walk of Canastota’s downtown, which is highly attractive and walkable with a number of retail and commercial establishments.

This project was the winning proposal of the New York Power Authority (‘NYPA’) and New York State Canal Corporation’s (‘NYSCC’) Reimagine the Canals (‘RTC’) Competition, and has received $1.5 Million in grant funding which will be available to the developer to utilize in redeveloping the site.

The preferred redevelopment for the site is a “pocket neighborhood” concept that includes a mix of housing, creative site design and layout, and reactivation of the canal waterfront.  By linking new desirable housing choices to the historic Erie Canal’s one-of-a-kind trail and waterway system, this project will appeal to a growing demand for connected, walkable, and amenity–based homes and neighborhoods. In addition to the $1.5 million Reimagine the Canals funding, the Village of Canastota was also selected for a $4.5 million NY Forward grant, and this project has the opportunity to receive NY Forward funding as part of that process.

Madison County has released a RFQ. Responses are due August 7, 2024.
