Canalside Living

The canalside pocket neighborhood will:

  • provide a variety of housing types that appeal to residents of all ages

  • give residents direct access to the Erie Canalway Trail and Old Erie Canal waterway

  • revitalize a former vacant site and bring new residents to Canastota’s downtown

  • reactivate and leverage the Erie Canal for quality of life and economic development

Click the video animation for a tour of the site. Please note, this video is meant to help conceptualize the project and help bring the pocket neighborhood to life, but the full design is yet to be finalized.

 What is a pocket neighborhood?

Pocket neighborhoods are clustered groups of neighboring houses or apartments gathered around a shared open space. These types of developments were first coined by architect Ross Chapin and have taken off in the northwest with more now being seen in other parts of the country. Rather than build one house on one lot, another house on another lot, and repeat, the pocket neighborhood lays out the whole community together to offer residents more amenities and a shared sense of community.
